Skiing and snowboarding in New Zealand’s South Island is hugely popular with families during the school holidays.
Kids had a blast during the winter break (July), and with the recent dump of snow in August, there’s even more reason to look forward to the upcoming spring school holidays. (The New Zealand school holidays run from 24 September to 9 October, with the Australian holiday season starting 17 September and running through 16 October, depending on the region.)
Spring is an ideal time to book in a few lessons for the kids. If they’re already skiing / riding, one last winter holiday cements what they’ve learned during the season and gets them excited about next winter. If your kids still haven’t learned to ski / board, spring is the perfect opportunity to give it a try, with fewer crowds and warmer conditions. Plus, having the kids in ski school means parents are free to enjoy a few runs on their own!
The spring school holidays are also a great time to find deals. Rental car companies, hotels, and the ski resorts often offer deals for the last few weeks of the season, so shop around and see what you can find. For example, Heritage Queenstown is offering a Winter Family Breakfast Special for two adults and two kids, including accommodation in a deluxe family room, a buffet breakfast for all, and drink vouchers for parents to unwind at the end of the day.
With the longer, warmer days, there’s also plenty for families to do off the slopes. In Christchurch, the Margaret Mahy Family Playground and Christchurch Gondola are always fun outings for families. In Queenstown, kids love ice-skating at the Queenstown Ice Arena, while Puzzling World in Wanaka is a family favourite. Or head up to Snow Farm, located across the valley from Cardrona, to try cross-country skiing and play in the Snow Fun Zone.
There is always plenty to enjoy during the September school holidays, so plan your visit and have a blast!
